Shock Chlorine Granules – 5 kg

Shock Chlorine Granules – 5 kg is a fast-acting, stabilised chlorine treatment designed to raise the chlorine level in swimming pool water when additional disinfection is required.

It can be used when starting up a pool, treating green water or correcting insufficient chlorine levels. According to the supplied manufacturer's label, the formulation contains troclosene sodium dihydrate and provides 54% active chlorine (± 2%).

Supplied in a 5 kg bucket, this format provides a larger quantity of shock chlorine for multiple treatments when needed, while allowing each dose to be adapted to the pool's volume and water condition.

What is shock chlorine used for?

Shock chlorine is designed to increase chlorine levels rapidly and reinforce swimming pool disinfection.

Its fast-dissolving granules help eliminate microorganisms in pool water, including bacteria and algae.

Unlike slow-dissolving chlorine tablets used for routine disinfection, shock chlorine is intended for situations that require a rapid increase in chlorine concentration.

When should you use shock chlorine?

Shock chlorine may be used in several situations:

  • Pool start-up: to increase disinfection when reopening or starting up the pool.

  • Green pool water: to help treat algae and restore water quality.

  • Low chlorine levels: to correct an insufficient concentration of disinfectant.

The need for shock treatment depends on water conditions. It should not be applied automatically according to a fixed schedule.

How much shock chlorine should you use?

How does the dosage change according to water conditions?

The supplied manufacturer's label specifies three separate dosing situations:

Situation Label dosage per 10 m³
Pool start-up 150 g
Green water treatment 80 g
Increase chlorine by 0.5 ppm 9 g

These quantities apply to different situations and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Before treatment, determine your pool volume and check the chlorine and pH levels. The supplied label specifies a pH range of 7.2 to 7.4.

How to use shock chlorine granules

Follow the application procedure indicated on the supplied manufacturer's label:

  1. Test your water: measure chlorine and pH, adjusting pH to between 7.2 and 7.4 if necessary.

  2. Select the appropriate dose: choose the quantity corresponding to the water condition and pool volume.

  3. Turn on filtration: ensure the filtration system is operating throughout application.

  4. Apply the granules: add the measured product directly into the skimmer, as specified on the label. Never introduce two different treatment products into the skimmer simultaneously.

  5. Check the water again: measure the relevant water parameters after treatment before allowing swimming to resume.

The supplied label does not specify a universal waiting time before swimming. Water conditions must be checked before returning to the pool.

Shock chlorine 5 kg vs 1 kg: which should you choose?

The 5 kg bucket is a practical choice when you want a larger supply of shock chlorine available for pool maintenance and occasional corrective treatments.

If you prefer a smaller container, iopool also offers shock chlorine in a 1 kg pack.

Always follow the dosage instructions for the specific formulation being used. A larger pack does not mean that more product should be added during a single treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Is this 5 kg shock chlorine stabilised?

Yes. The supplied label identifies a stabilised formulation containing troclosene sodium dihydrate and 54% active chlorine (± 2%). Stabilisation helps protect chlorine against UV degradation.

Can I use this shock chlorine in a bromine-treated pool?

The supplied label states that the product is incompatible with bromine and PHMB. Do not mix different disinfectants.

Can I add the granules directly to the pool water?

The supplied manufacturer's instructions specify application directly into the skimmer while filtration is running. Avoid direct contact between the granules and pool liners or sensitive surfaces.

How soon can I swim after treatment?

The label does not specify a fixed waiting time. Check the water parameters and only resume swimming once appropriate safety conditions have been met.

Does shock chlorine replace regular chlorine treatment?

No. Shock chlorine rapidly raises chlorine levels when corrective treatment is needed. Slow chlorine is intended for ongoing disinfection.
